Design is how it works

“Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like… People think it’s this veneer - that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”

-Steve Jobs

Content Aware Image Resizing

Far from a perfect solution, but pretty freakin' cool nonetheless:

Hans Gruber 'Album Cover' top Google Image

Sweet! My picture of Hans Gruber is at the top of Google's search results for 'Hans Gruber'. I threw it together for my music-making alter ego on songfight.org

The Dao of Web Design

Posted way back in 2000 [!] by John Allsopp of A List Apart fame. It's still an inspirational primer to the philosophy of accessible site design.

Firstly, think about what your pages do, not what they look like. Let your design flow from the services which they will provide to your users, rather than from some overarching idea of what you want pages to look like. Let form follow function, rather than trying to take a particular design and make it “work”.

Svend Toft on Web Typography

In his article titled max-width in Internet Explorer, venerable Svend Toft discusses line length and readability in web design:

His site is a rich resource for web development, and is designed well - elegantly minimal, one of the most successful elastic layouts I've seen. Props!
