Thank God For Memphis

Sorry, flash is not available.

Submitted for Songfight Monday, August 20th 2007.

Suzanne and I stopped at Memphis, TN on the way home from New Orleans years ago one lazy summer afternoon. We didn't spend much time, but I was determined to pay respects to Sun Studios, so we took a walk down the dusty highway from the city center.

Out of respect for the Sun Records roster, I was determined to make something in the spirit of Rockabilly, if not in style. I haven't been playing much lately, so I was feeling rusty. I was also short on ideas - my few memories of Memphis are perhaps better suited to a jazz instrumental. Oh well - it felt good to rock out and record something again.

The guitar solo (unfortunately) is a sample. I ran out of time to even attempt a decent solo (I have no guitar skills) so I compromised. I'm not very crazy about it, so I'll record a better one myself one of these days.

Lyrics:

I've been on the road so long singin the same song
I need to fill my cup
It's the middle of the summer and it's hot down by the river
But this side's in the shade

Thank God for Memphis, Oh Yeah...

I'm standing in the street and melting in the heat
and I'm staring at the sun
My honey don't like Elvis, she really couldn't care less
but I know he's the King

Thank God for Memphis, Oh Yeah...
